Karmelo Anthony’s Defense Seeks New Trial, Judge’s Recusal Following Murder Conviction

The legal team representing Karmelo Anthony has filed two significant post-trial motions as it continues its effort to overturn his murder conviction. The filings request that Judge John Roach Jr. recuse himself from any remaining proceedings and ask the court to grant Anthony a new trial. According to the defense, the motion to recuse is based in part on comments Judge Roach made during post-trial media interviews while Anthony’s appeal was pending. Anthony’s attorneys argue that the judge’s public statements—where he defended the trial, his courtroom decisions, and the jury’s verdict—create the appearance that he cannot impartially rule on post-trial motions.

The separate motion for a new trial raises several constitutional and procedural issues. Among the claims are allegations that restrictions on courtroom access violated Anthony’s right to a public trial and that issues surrounding his decision not to testify may have affected the fairness of the proceedings. The defense contends these matters should be reviewed by an independent judge. Anthony, 19, was convicted in June of the fatal stabbing of Austin Metcalf during a high school track meet in Frisco and was sentenced to 35 years in prison. Following the conviction, a newly assembled appellate team took over the case and has stated it intends to pursue every available legal avenue on Anthony’s behalf.

The court has not yet ruled on either motion. If the request for recusal is granted, another judge would determine whether Anthony should receive a new trial. If denied, Anthony’s legal team is expected to continue pursuing relief through the appeals process. The latest filings have generated widespread discussion on social media, with supporters and critics closely watching to see how the court responds in one of Texas’ most closely followed criminal cases.
